To close the gap between mobile and desktop experience, Jide based its approach on user’s intuition, learning from 30 years operating system experience and creating the environment, where users feels comfortable. Remix OS is a very interesting experience that mostly get it right about porting the Android ecosystem to the desktop. This has the advantage of working with all existing apps, and could be added to the OS in a next version. Add to Remix the ability to assign a key press to a tap at a given position.Sadly, most Android games do not support keys as of now. If the app also supports the keyboard, it is possible to press two keys at once and both steer and accelerate.Having one mouse instead of two thumbs to hit on those actions, makes the game totally unplayable. Notification panel opens with a mouse click on the System Tray, at its bottom you can find an action panel with screenshot, location, do not disturb, auto-hide taskbar and settings. Taskbar, start button and menu, System Tray feels like Windows, notification panel feels more like OSX. To provide better desktop experience, Jide added intuitive PC features such as multi-window support, taskbar, start button and menu, System Tray and notification panel. It is evident that Android UX, built for mobile and tablet, has missing bits to run on desktop. I’ll try to focus on the user experience between mobile OS and desktop. It has already been reviewed here or here. My goal is not to cover step by step review of the device. Remix power button works like magic : There’s no physical button to press, to switch Mini just tap on its top. Remix Mini has an ethernet port, a HDMI port, two USB 2.0 ports and a headphone port, so you can plug in a monitor, a mouse and a keyboard cables to get a real desktop experience running Android apps. Successfully launched on Kickstarter by Jide, a Chinese company founded by 3 ex-Googlers, Remix OS borrows bits of its code from the open source Android-x86 project, although the Remix Mini has an ARM processor. Recently I had a chance to play with a new Remix Mini, the first true Android PC.
